The Business Challenge
Individuals who care for their loved ones need training specifically designed to meet their needs as these are often very different to those working in residential care services. The timing of training sessions also needs to be tailored specifically for these individuals as they often cannot attend at the times when others may be able to. Most importantly, caring for family members can be a very isolating and giving individuals an opportunity to meet other people in the same situation as them, to share stories and information can be extremely beneficial.
The Solution*
The Work Based Learning Coordinator for Health and Social Care met with the director of the Carers Centre to design short workshops to take place at the college at a time that would be suitable for individuals who care for their loved ones. There were 2 sessions per day with lunch provided in a specially designated area in the canteen so that the morning session could stay on and the afternoon session could come early so that they could all meet up and share their stories and speak with like-minded people.
The Impact
Individuals attended Awareness workshops in Medication, Manual Handling, Risk Assessment and First Aid. The feedback from these training sessions was very positive indeed, however it appears that the carers were most grateful to be given the opportunity to spend time with other individuals in the same position as themselves.
